Hauiti Farming

Hauiti owns and farms 2,500 hectares of land which includes over 600 hectares of fertile flats.

Production off Hauiti includes lamb, beef, wool, sweetcorn, squash and honey.  During the peak of the season we have 16,000 sheep, 2,560 cattle 36 beehives and run 38 working dogs.

Hauiti is farmed as two separate stations and is a continuous landform that extends 11 kilometres inland.

Hauiti Restoration Kaitawa Estuary

In 2011 Hauiti started a restoration programme of the Kaitawa estuary on the Southern boundary of the Holiday Park. The estuary is the home to the critically endangered NZ Doterrel which has less than 1,700 adults left. 

Initially wilding pine and gorse weeds were controlled.  Now 25 predator traps are constantly set to control rats, stoats and hedgehogs.

Since 2011 there have been 2,200 metres of new fencing creating riparian zones around both the estuary and tributaries. This allows the vegetation to recover and provides a buffer between the estuary and the farmland

Over 20,000 native plants have been planted in the last two years with many of the plants planted by local school children.
